Well, good for you, well done, take that break I'm sure you deserve it.
Before you go let me ask you one question, a very searching question actually, one that is guaranteed to get a response and maybe even annoy you, perhaps frustrate you.
Will you be checking your e-mails?
A resounding NO I hear from a large percentage of readers, "I'm trying to get away from the office the last thing I want to do is take it with me!" I can understand those sentiments, even agree with a desire to get away from it “all", but the sad reality is that many of us (myself included) will answer, much more quietly and probably quite sheepishly.... "Actually, yes, I will be checking from time to time, just to see what's happening you understand, nothing too heavy, just keeping in touch really.”
Okay, so now the confession is over I'll ask another question How exactly will you be doing it? Personally I'll be using my latest toy, my absolutely fantastic apple iPhone - more about that here.
But while strong subject of keeping in touch, one thing that a Wiki website does is allow you to do just that, from just about anywhere you can get Internet access you can check the progress on documentation, contribute if you wish or just simply observe from a distance.
Facilities within most Wiki’s allow you to put a “watch” on certain pages, sections or "projects" so that you could be alerted whenever those pages change or even when specific users (perhaps clients), contribute. It's an interesting and flexible way to "stay connected " from anywhere you can get to a web browser.
[Technical (or rather non-technical note), if you have ever set up your laptop to collect e-mails abroad you may have found difficulty either in receiving them at all, or more commonly sending them from your remote location. This is often caused by the security requirements of your local Internet provider or settings on your own file server (basically the email system is trying to convince itself that when you send an e-mail it really is from you, and not someone else pretending to be you!) The advantage of using a Wiki to keep in touch is that all you need is access with any web browser, (just like Hotmail if you’ve ever used it) so you won’t have to take your laptop (complete with e-mail settings and passwords) with you]
So one more tick in the “business advantage” box when using Wiki’s, the ability to stay connected even when you’re away, and without having to take half your network with you!
