S Curves

The first time most Project Managers become aware of the existence of S Curves is when they are requested by the Client or senior management to include one in their next progress report.

This is when the problems usually start because MS Project users may need to export their project data to a MS Excel file, and or course this is not as easy as it first seems.

Most companies will be looking for a COST VERSUS TIME S CURVE

The Cost versus Time S Curve is appropriate for projects that contain labour and non-labour tasks. It shows cumulative costs expended over time for the duration of the project, and may be used to assist in the calculation of the project's cash flow.

But you will need to make sure that your tasks are correctly costed, which may in turn lead to you look at how you compile your tasks in the first place - for example do you integrate to your estimating or costing packages? You may be surprised to find out what levels of integration are possible.
